How to Choose Your First Tarot Deck
How to Choose Your First Tarot Deck
When choosing your first Tarot deck, it should speak to you visually and symbolically. Most Tarot decks only show a few examples of the cards on the back of the box, so I suggest you hop onto YouTube to view the deck walk-through video before buying. Even better, spend some time online browsing through tarot cards that you find appealing, then find the flip-through on YouTube before you even hit the store. I have had many times when I failed to do this. I was disappointed when the minor arcana cards turned out to be PIP’s (simple, minimalistic illustrations instead of full scenes that told stories). Those cards fell flat for me. I couldn’t connect with them at all. The Spoopy Tarot was a good example of this. Watch the walk-through of this on my YouTube channel, and you’ll see what I mean. It is in the back of my bookshelf or in a box, ready to be rehomed at Half Price Books. You have to resonate with the cards. The Light Seers Tarot, however, is an excellent deck for storytelling. Each card features full scenes that speak clearly to me. Think about what kind of theme speaks to you. Do you like modern-looking cards? Witchy cards? Animal-themed decks? Collage-type decks? Trust your gut. If it feels right to you, then it probably is.
