Tarot and Love: What the Tarot Can and Can’t Tell You About Relationships
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten this question in a Tarot Reading. "So… how do they feel about me?" Love and Tarot have been flirting for a very long time. Tarot can be a fascinating tool for examining attraction, communication, emotional patterns, compatibility, boundaries, and what you actually want from a relationship. But there's an important distinction between reflection and certainty.
Suppose you're confused about a relationship. Instead of asking: "Will we get married?" you could ask: "What should I understand about the current dynamic between us?" That question creates room for insight rather than demanding a guaranteed prediction.
You might pull the Two of Cups, suggesting mutual connection or emotional reciprocity.
You might pull The Moon, highlighting uncertainty, projection, or information you don't yet have.
Or perhaps you get the Eight of Cups, which can invite you to consider whether something you've emotionally invested in still fulfills you.
Notice what's happening here. The cards aren't making the decision for you. They're helping you examine it.
Tarot readers frequently get questions such as: "Does my ex still love me?" "Are they thinking about me?" "Are they secretly jealous?" It's tempting to treat a spread like supernatural surveillance. But another person's private thoughts aren't something you can reliably verify through cards. A more useful question might be: "What do I need to understand about my attachment to this situation?" Yes, that's slightly less juicy but it’s considerably more empowering.
Try questions like:
What am I currently seeking in a relationship?
What relationship pattern should I become more aware of?
What energy am I bringing into my dating life?
What boundary would support me right now?
What am I overlooking in this situation?
What can this relationship teach me?
Those questions keep the focus somewhere you actually have influence: your choices.
Repeatedly asking the same emotionally loaded question can make Tarot more confusing, not less. Sometimes the healthiest reading ends with closing the deck and having an actual conversation with the person involved. Because Tarot can help you explore your relationships. It cannot replace communication, consent, boundaries, or reality. And reality, inconvenient as it is, still gets the final word.
